چکیده

In the rendezvous problem, the goal for two mobile agents is to meet whenever this is possible. In the rendezvous with detection problem, an additional goal for the agents is to detect the impossibility of a rendezvous (e.g., due to symmetrical initial positions of the agents) and stop. We consider the rendezvous problem with and without detection for identical anonymous mobile agents (i.e., running the same deterministic algorithm) with tokens in an anonymous synchronous torus with a sense of direction, and show that there is a striking computational difference between one and more tokens. Specifically, we show that (1) two agents with a constant number of unmovable tokens, or with one movable token each, cannot rendezvous in an n × n torus if they have o(log n) memory, while they can solve the rendezvous with detection problem in an n × m torus as long as they have one unmovable token and O(log n+ logm)memory; in contrast, (2) when two agents have two movable tokens each then the rendezvous problem (respectively, rendezvous with detection problem) is solvable with constant memory in an arbitrary n × m (respectively, n × n) torus; and finally, (3) two agents with three movable tokens each and constant memory can solve the rendezvouswith detection problem in an n×m torus. This is the first publication in the literature that studies tradeoffs between the number of tokens, memory and knowledge the agents need in order to meet in a torus. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Mobile Agent Rendezvous in a Synchronous Torus

We consider the rendezvous problem for identical mobile agents (i.e., running the same deterministic algorithm) with tokens in a synchronous torus with a sense of direction and show that there is a striking computational difference between one and more tokens. More specifically, we show that 1) two agents with a constant number of unmovable tokens or with one movable token each cannot rendezvou...

Black Hole Search and Exploration in Unoriented Tori with Synchronous Scattered Finite Automata

We consider the problem of locating a black hole in a synchronous, anonymous, and unoriented torus network using mobile agents. A black hole is a harmful network node that destroys any agent visiting it without leaving any trace. The objective is to locate the black hole using as few agents as possible. We present here an almost optimal deterministic algorithm for synchronous (partially) unorie...

Black Hole Search with Finite Automata Scattered in a Synchronous Torus

We consider the problem of locating a black hole in synchronous anonymous networks using finite state agents. A black hole is a harmful node in the network that destroys any agent visiting that node without leaving any trace. The objective is to locate the black hole without destroying too many agents. This is difficult to achieve when the agents are initially scattered in the network and are u...

The Power of Tokens: Rendezvous and Symmetry Detection for Two Mobile Agents in a Ring

Rendezvous with detection differs from the usual rendezvous problem in that two mobile agents not only accomplish rendezvous whenever this is possible, but can also detect the impossibility of rendezvous (e.g., due to symmetrical initial positions of the agents) in which case they are able to halt. We study the problem of rendezvous with and without detection of two anonymous mobile agents in a...

Mobile Agent Rendezvous in a Ring

In the rendezvous search problem, two mobile agents must move along the n nodes of a network so as to minimize the time required to meet or rendezvous. When the mobile agents are identical and the network is anonymous, however, the resulting symmetry can make the problem impossible to solve. Symmetry is typically broken by having the mobile agents run either a randomized algorithm or different ...
